Bluegrass Runners, Kentucky’s original running club, has been organizing the Thoroughbred Classic 5K for over 30 years. This Thanksgiving Day tradition is one of Lexington’s largest races, attracting over 2,500 participants and, in recent years, raising over $35,000 for local charities.
Building on its success, the club added a new event to Kentucky’s race calendar in 2017: The Bluegrass Mile. The popularity of the competitive mile has experienced a recent resurgence not seen since the 1970s. Bluegrass Runners is looking to rebuild the distance’s profile at a unique venue, allowing participants to test their speed on historic Lexington horse racing track The Red Mile.
I wanted the logo to employ a ’70s vibe without being overly retro. Thank goodness for thick lines. They were big back in the day but still work well today. Plus, they’re a perfect way to represent a track, showcasing the race’s unique distance and surface. The color is pulled from the Bluegrass Runners logo so as to let runners know who’s in charge of this new attraction.
