Kentucky-based Larry Mac’s Beer Cheese had been having trouble getting their various flavors to stand out on store shelves. They decided to start varying their label designs so that customers could easily identify their different offerings – Swiss, jalapeno, wine-flavored – at a glance.
In mid-2016, they asked me to design the label for their newest flavor: Kentucky bourbon. I looked at their other labels as well as their competition’s and saw that there was a lot of room for creating something different yet familiar to the target audience: Kentuckians who take pride in bourbon country. I designed the background using an actual bourbon barrel texture to create a realism not currently present among local beer cheese branding. The font was meant to give the spread a classy, sophisticated look while the hand-drawn accents added a friendly, old-timey touch.
